Welcome!
On behalf of the Office of Greek Life and the over 1,100 Greek students on our campus, welcome to the Greek Life web site. We hope this site offers you the opportunity to learn more about our Greek system, its structure, and the many opportunities afforded to our students through Greek Life at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Currently there are 24 nationally recognized fraternities and sororities actively chartered on our campus, consisting of ten (10) chapters representing the Interfraternity Council, seven (7) chapters representing the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and seven (7) chapters representing the College Panhellenic Council.
Our Greek system has 65 years of rich tradition and history on the campus of Southern Miss, with an alumni base in the tens of thousands and current membership continuing to grow as more students are choosing to become a part of our family each semester. Our wish is to continually enhance and grow our Greek system through a constant display of our student’s actions in philanthropy, civic engagement, and academic excellence.
The Office of Greek Life at Southern Miss and its staff exist for the sole purpose of empowering our students and their respective organizations to reach new heights in leadership through self-governance, membership development, and accountability of standards for excellence. Greek Life is a thriving part of the student life where our students can better themselves, better the Greek community, and leave Southern Miss better than they found it…

Panhellenic Recruitment: 10 things to consider.
1. Recruitment recommendations on a potential new member, should be sent by August 30, 2010 to following address:
ATTN: <CHAPTER NAME>
Office of Greek Life
The University of Southern Mississippi
118 College Drive #5008
Hattiesburg, MS 39406
2. Recruitment recommendations are not required for all chapters but are highly recommended. Every chapter has their own policy regarding how recommendations are handled.
3. We recommend getting a "letter of rec" for each CPC chapter on campus. If you are having difficulty getting a letter for a chapter, there are a couple of ways we can help. Begin by emailing greek.life@usm.edu and indicating your issue and where you live. In some cases, there are local (hometown) alumnae panhellenic associations who can aide in this process. Do not stress out, that is why we are here to assist. Please do not wait until the last minute to reach out to us - if you're having trouble, help is just around the corner.
4. Most national organizaiton's have (on their website) a place for alumnae to download the official recommendation form. If you need the form, begin by checking there. It is the responsibility of the alumna member to complete the form for women going through recruitment and follow their national organization's protocol when filling out the form.
5. Click this link to see all of the CPC chapters we have on campus.
6. Legacies. Being a legacy does not guarantee you a bid. Every chapter has a different policy regarding how legacies are handled. It is also important to consider that many chapters have more legacies going through recruitment than quota spots for a new member class. That alone makes it impossible for every legacy to be given a bid.
7. The best thing a potential member can do is go through recruitment with an open mind and make friends. In the end, formal recruitment is principled in mutual selection. The potential new members narrow down the chapters that they like and the chapters narrow down the PNMs that they can invite back to their events.
8. GPA. There is a minimum GPA requirement to be a new member for every chapter. This requirement varies from chapter to chapter. On rare occasions - and only in some chapters - are exceptions granted for women SLIGHTLY below the minimum GPA. These ONLY happen in cases where a prospective member demonstrates signifcant extracurricular involvement/activity. Be able to self yourself and speak about the importance of academics while in the recruitment events to all chapters.
9. When registering, Make sure you (1) add a picture and (2) indicate accurate activities/involvements/awards and (3) pay your registration fee. What you do "outside the classroom" is a good way of highlighting how well rounded a student you are.
10. Freshman, attend a Preview and visit the Greek Life informational immediatly before Eagle After Hours (9pm / Day #1). This is a great place to get additional questions answered and interact with Panhellenic leaders prior to the fall semester.
